The Backyard Sanctuary of Misfits
The Backyard Sanctuary of Misfits is a physical example of the philosophy that every outdoor space should and will maintain a natural state of sustainability if we simply allow it to exist. There are over 40 million acres of lawn in america, making it the highest-yielding national crop. This monotony not only threatens the extinction of countless species of pollinators, but also contributes to placelessness and the rise of mental health crisis in our post-modern era of late-stage capitalism, to name but two effects of the disconnection our society falsely deems as normal.
Our long-term goal with this project is to establish a permanent and combined homesteading headquarters, community garden, and animal sanctuary in collaboration with Satori Gardening Insights. This will not only serve as a neutral space of safety for humans and animals alike, but also as an educational and physical community resource hub. It is time we take back the power and knowledge that is inherently human, how to steward the Earth.
For now, this vision is rooted in our current space, where we are actively stewarding animal friends in our ever-evolving backyard sanctuary. With produce grown, we support our local network of community food pantries as well as create educational resources on growing and processing food at home.
We invite you to step into a deeper connection with the vibrant life thriving in the ecosystem around you, one you are a part of. We are moving beyond the ecological burden of conventional modern landscapes by transforming the ordinary into a vibrant connection that fosters community and actively heals natural ecosystems.
Our Friends & Their Stories:
11 September 2024
Luna
Found on a pizza box in a ditch full of trash one cold September morning in Baltimore, it is likely she was left behind when she outgrew her caretaker's capacity and was old enough to be weaned from her Mama. Even so, she has blossomed into a spunky, strong girlie nicknamed 'Lulu', a nod to her delulu, toddler-like nature and love of life.

Ladybug
Adopted into the Hoo family from BARCS after being found in the busy downtown streets all alone. Lovingly referred to by Vanessa as her 'PTSD girlie', Ladybug is quick to express her boundaries while remaining a loyal companion through tough times. She loves climbing on trees and wrestling with Ryan Hoo's forearm.

Sage
Sage is a gentle-hearted cat that loves to give and receive love. She is here to transmute negativity into positivity, an example to us all regarding the power of presence. She is best friends with Josie and a wonderful anchor for Ladybug.

Josie
Josie is a sweet, deaf, partially albino border collie who likes to know what is happening around her. After a questionable puppyhood and living life as a local stray on a Montana reservation, she is now a happily adopted member of the family. She likes to help maintain order amongst her siblings, particularly Luna. She naturally reads the energy of another's presence and allows her thoughts to be heard.

Izzy
Even in her golden years, Izzy's puppy spirit ignites when she sees members of her family, now all grown up. She continues to lead a life of transmutation as she reflects the hearts of those who surround her. Her favorite things are fancy dinners and long walks.

Gilmore
Growing up alongside Ryan Hoo on the soccer field was no easy feat, and this lad loved every minute of it. After years of owning every tall patch of grass he could tickle his butt on in the Bronx, Gilmore is now living a peaceful retirement with family in Connecticut.
Petunia's Story
Adopted into the sanctuary in June of 2025, Petunia is the heart of it all.
